As of this writing, the housing boom is on a downward spiral, the credit market is tightening, the stocks are jittery, the retail sector is shaky, energy costs are rising, and the public is generally nervous about their finances. Why do we bring this up, in a sustainability website? Because this is a perfect time to explore our ways and how we ended up in this "mess." Honestly, if the economy was the strongest ever and life was filled with roses and cake, do you think it would be more difficult or less difficult to explore alternatives to our established lives? We, as humans, tend to learn the most of ourselves when "times are rough."
As we mentioned in the biginning and throughout the site, the systems of sustainability, among other things, actually save you money. The cyclical scenario of recessions (last one was in 1991), will be less "painful" if our means are well established beforehand and we don't live in a reactionary world. This recession is a reactionary move. We are reacting to a set of circumstances simultaneously and is therefore slowing down the economy and world market. Established sustainability principles create a sustainable market that does not have the cyclical up and down roller-coaster of excess followed by starvation. It provides a means to live our lives to whatever extent we wish so long as we balance our "footprint" with systems to eliminate it. It's similar to a car's shock-absorber - the road ahead will be less bumpy.
Sustainability is that balance and GreenOfaKind is that shock absorber - now is the perfect time to install it while our minds are clear to see that we can and need to change because none of us likes this state of the world. Together we brought down this house of cards but toghether we can also rebuild it stronger than ever. Now is the time!
